Valentine’s Day is but a few weeks away and there are hearts everywhere. It gives me cause to ponder, “What kind of heart attracts blessing?” Jesus said it was the pure in heart. What is the blessing that belongs to the pure in heart? They see God. Meditating on that scripture to flesh out, “What does purity of heart look like?” — I wrote a prayer. Perhaps as you read it, you will want to make it a prayer of your own.
~
A heart to know You . . . one that’s pure
may this be the aim I’m longing for.
~
Be still and know . . .
experience intimately . . .
Your Holy Essence washing over me.
Liquid Love . . . flush away my fear.
Let my eyes behold the spectrum
of Your radiating Light
the vibrant, prismatic,
iridescence of Your Presence
which splits the darkness that’s my night.
~
Open my ears to perceive
the volume, pitch, and timbre
of Your velvet Voice . . .
its resonance and romance courting me
that I might follow and reflect
on the authentic and the real
bypassing what is good
for the prize of what is best.
~
May I muse over things that are honorable
worthy of admiration . . .
and my genuine respect . . .
for the mouth speaks out of
that which fills the heart
and I so want to speak without regret.
~
Lord, let me taste and touch Real Beauty
in all of its various forms
skillfully woven by the Spirit and infused
as the alabaster jar’s perfume . . .
a saturating fragrance
in the fiber of my being
and releasing heaven’s tune.
~
Help me long for what is pleasing
my delight in You, Your delight in me
a circle complete, I will plant my feet
in your Living resplendent River . . .
fruitful in and out of season
forever receiving
from the Pure and Perfect One who is
Creator, Holy Giver.
~
Guide my hands to do the thing that’s just.
Please, fill my pen to write what’s true . . .
I commit to feed upon Your Word
to clarify my view.
~
And . . . fill my heart with mercy
so my words would be seasoned with salt
because it’s kindness that leads to repentance
says the sacred text of Paul.
~
Order my steps to walk in humility
understanding who You are
what my place is in this world
and chart it as my Northern Star.
~
God, grant me courage to step in the Light
and submit to the Spirit’s sword
as it judges my thoughts and intents
’cause . . . they reveal what I’m living for.
~
Give me grace to release what’s false
what must be plucked up from my soul
for the pure in heart are blessed
by the fruit that they reap because they see
the One who made them whole.
~
Then . . . if I see You as You are
behold Your Perfect Truth
I’ll be convinced, no longer doubt
the reflection I see
as Your eyes gaze at me
knowledge so sweet
identity complete
with the courage to walk it out.
