Waken My Senses

Did you know that King David said, “Sing to the Lord a new song”? How do those of us who aren’t songwriters do that? Perhaps it has something to do with experiencing God in new ways that bring a “song” to our hearts that we then “sing” back to our Creator in response. The writer of Hebrews said that the mature have had their senses trained to discern between good and evil (Heb. 5:14). We have spiritual senses that parallel our physical senses through which we perceive God. Consider, “Taste and see that God is good”; “He who has an ear, let him hear,” and there is much more. The following poem is an invitation to prayer for a deeper relationship with our Maker.

~

I need a new song . . .  capture my heart

fresh bread from your Presence I pray.

Let me taste of Your Goodness . . . melt in my mouth.

I want to breathe Your sweet fragrance all day.

~

Waken my senses . . .  open my eyes.

So I can see who You are.

Faithful God of the heavens . . .  reveal Your light

blazing as Bethlehem’s Star.

~

Lead me through my hidden depths

where no soul can go but You.

When I feel lost, though You’re right here,

give me a clearer view.

~

Sing to me softly, soothe with Your Voice

sweet nourishment to my bones

encouraging words that go straight to my heart

water my thirsty soul.

~

Extend Your most gentle, tender touch

with the kiss of kindness on my cheek.

Hold my hand in a grasp that is firm and secure

when what I feel is fear.

If sadness takes my joy away

wipe my every tear.

~

Then let the unknown

where confusion is sown

not steal Your Perfect Peace.

Encircle me with Arms of Strength

let me rest in Your Comforting Hug.

~

Waken my senses so I can perceive

and quietly soak in Your Love.
