More Than Meets the Eye

The foundation of faith that Creation would state

is evidence of a Creator.

Does its message stop there?

Is that all it would share?

Or . . . should we read between the lines?

~

What if it’s an inexhaustible love letter

penned by a Heavenly Scribe

expressed in the mystery of symbolic language

and written to be read and interpreted endlessly

by those who’ve already met our Maker

so that we might daily plumb the depths

of a deeper intimacy as we study the “Face”

of the One who fashioned us from clay?

~

Let me not fail to find the romance of this Lover of my soul

who woos me with the tender kisses

of a gentle breeze brushing softly past my cheek . . .

who courts me to know Him better

with the dramatic flair of fiery sunsets . . .

a Pursuer who lavishes His beloved

with perfumed bouquets of fragrant wildflowers

then serenades with symphonies

sung by birds and bees and crickets

punctuated by the bold crashing of thunder

or the roar of a majestic waterfall . . .

~

Let me not fail to taste the flavors of colors

and touch the textures of sounds

opening my eyes to see and smell and savor

the richness of a gourmet meal

that’s been spread before me

on this Grand Banquet Table of Life . . .

[for which the Host has spared no expense

so that I might know my Bridegroom

as Adam knew Eve] . . .

~

Indeed, might I learn aspects of the Divine

from something as simple as a dragonfly?

Then write for it a tribute because of its design?

. . . Dragonfly, dragonfly,

king of the smallest things which fly.

Wisp of wonder,

your flight is choreographed

in an airy balletic dance.

Peacefully, your delicate wings

teach me of subtlety and nuance,

silent stirrings, and mysterious movements

of the Spirit.

~

Your landings are soundless and serene.

So like the Sovereign One who made you,

soft secrets and whispered words

are the language you speak.

And when I still my heart like the pond

in meditative musing

I perceive the Sacred Presence you reflect.

~

Romans 1:20 says that God has made Himself manifest in Creation. That means that it is important not only to read the written Word of recorded scripture but we must also “read” the embedded wisdom in the record of the spoken Word which became Creation in Genesis.

Colossians 1:15-17 says about Christ who is “the Word made flesh” that He:

“… is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation:  for by Him all things were created … all things have been created through Him and for Him.  He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

When we study Creation, we are learning facets about the attributes and “Voice” of God, as well as nuances of character, the way we similarly learn an author’s voice when we examine his or her writings, paintings, or other works of art.
